Andrew Alexis Varvel, an independent candidate for the North Dakota House of Representatives, likes the Transparent Election Initiative (https://transparentelection.org). A lot. He likes it so much that he pledges to either sponsor or co-sponsor legislation to prohibit corporations from making political campaign contributions. He challenges other candidates to make this pledge too.

Several pictures on my campaign website are clone paintings of photographs for the purpose of making these pictures look like paintings.

Running as an independent candidate and as a party candidate each has its advantages and disadvantages. A party candidate may – or may not – have a party machine to back him up. What a party candidate gains from party machinery is made up for by adherence to the party platform. If the candidate actually agrees with the platform, it can work for him. Otherwise, he becomes a phony.

The 47th District of the North Dakota Legislature comprises most of northwest Bismarck north of I-94 and west of State Street. It is bounded to the west by the Missouri River. It is bounded to the south by Interstate 94. Its northern frontier from State Street to Washington Street is on 43rd Avenue NE. Then, between 43rd Avenue NE and 57th Avenue NW, the frontier with District 7 is on Washington Street. From Washington Street to River Road, District 47's northern frontier is 57th Avenue NW. River Road becomes District 47's boundary from 57th Avenue NW to Burnt Creek Loop. Burnt Creek Loop forms District 47's northern frontier from River Road to Burnt Creek Loop's intersection with Olive Tree Drive. Then, Olive Tree Drive forms much of District 47's northern frontier all the way to the Missouri River.

It somehow tickles me that, here I had been joking about how this is really The Year of the Horse's Ass, and come to think of it, that might be a good figurative translation of The Year of the Fire Horse on a cultural level. Intense. Energetic. Transformative. In earlier eras, the birth rate in the far east would plummet because girls born in The Year of the Fire Horse were said to be rebellious and headstrong. So, according to Chinese astrology, the Fire Horse is a jerk – so calling it The Year of the Horse's Ass wouldn't be too far off.
